Suggestions?

In Christmas shopping for Marley I feel like I am being bombarded with toys! There are lists of toys that are "parent picks" or "award winners". Marley's 1st birthday falls just after Christmas (January 2) so I am also looking for a birthday present.

What toys have your kids loved? What toys have you thought your kids would love but haven't?

I know every child is different, but I would love to get some feedback on this one.

  1. My boys have loved the fisher price little people toys. They have the car shop, the train, the bus.....you wonder how Marly would love this its sounds like a boy toy. They make girl ones, like a mini van that has a car seat. I think they like them because they can hold them in there hands and they also make noise. I think they make a girl barn set. Lexi also plays with them when she comes.

Its hard to buy for a one year old, sometimes it sits for awhile then one day its becomes there fav. toy. Also you learn a lot with your first child, on what to do with your next one. Good luck....happy shopping :)

  2. Hi, I got Amaya the Parents' pound a ball thing for Christmas. She played with something like it at a friends house and it really engaged her. I love the Parents' brand (at target).
I also love to make sure my kids get a book for each gift getting day, you can never have enough. The Oliva series has just come out with board books.
A friend just lent me a block wagaon. You know those peek a-boo blocks it is a toy that goes with those. Also anything she can push around the house now that she is walking, strollers are a toy that last with little girls.

  3. Kaiya loves her baby doll and stroller. She does everything to take care of her baby that a real baby would need (i.e., feeding, rocking to sleep, changing diaper, etc.) and she spends probably an hour and a half a day pushing her baby, bear, and other random toys around the house in her stroller (she even waves bye-bye to me before she pushes them, as if she's actually taking them somewhere, given Marley's personality, she's probably the same way and loves to pretend to be grown-up). I also like the wooden puzzles by Melissa and Doug, although 1 may be a little young to figure it out, it's as though you can see them learning as they try to put the pieces back correctly. Oh, and not really much of a gift, but Kai is fascinated with bubbles.

PS - I love how you change your blog so often:)

  4. She definitely needs a baby, and stroller, and a little princess bike!!! I know these are pretty big to have in the house, but Lex loves the little tike cars she can get in and out of and push around!

Maybe you should just get her a puppy...hahahah!!!

  5. We have a box of fisher price little people toys in our attic that my teenage kids are saving for their kids. They always loved them.
You can't go wrong with old fashioned basics. We always had a drawstring bag full of wooden blocks, both the standand, square ABC kind and the kind that had a variety of shapes and sizes. They use them in a variety of ways as they get older and older. We loved the wooden puzzles and you can never have enough books.

  7. Hey Heidi - I keep forgetting to send you guys the invite to Kirk's art opening! It's addressed and everything! Sorry! I know you have to help at enrichment that night so maybe you guys won't be able to make the opening - if you can make it up there by 9 though, we'd love to see you.

As for toys (and remember, I am OLD now as my youngest is 10!) but honestly, everyone one of my kids loved 2 toys without fail (and any kid that ever came to our house) there's a toy with holes and balls where they use a hammer and the balls go down a little shute and come out the bottom. They never get tired of playing with that thing and it's perfect for about a 1 year old. Also - there's a similar toy, it has wooden pegs and a wooden little hammer and board, they can hammer the pegs down and then turn it over and start over again. Both boys and girls love that.

My one piece of advice as a mom of both boys and girls is not too get to stuck to toys that are gender specific. I say that because there are a lot of toys that might be considered a "boy" toy that a girl will really like (as the toys I mentioned are sometimes considered boy toys). And little boys love to play with little kids play kitchens just as much as girls.

Also blocks. All kids love blocks beginning at about age 1, and they are a timeless toy that they will play with for years and never really outgrow.

  11. Lexi's favorite toy was the little people mini van that she got on her 1st birthday! She pushed that thing around the house all day every day. She is now going on 5 and still plays with it. She also loved and still loves wooden puzzles and the fisher-price musical tea set. Also, a little stroller and their own little baby doll never fails. Its too easy to get out of control w/ little girls so good luck!!!

  12. I think different kids are just fascinated by different things. I don't know if its because one of my children is a boy and one is a girl but my kids like none of the same toys. It is kind of nice though because they don't fight over them.
