3-0

I turned 30 on Monday.  I seriously can't believe it.  I should still be in my 20's.  Anyway... the day started off a bit off.  I woke up to a messy house (never good:), my kids woke up a little ornery (probably from missing naps the day before), and I had nothing planned for the day.  Not terrible, but not exciting.

Jared's schedule is always busy and this month has felt especially busy.  His vacation week this month counts for his days off for the month, he's q3, and he's been getting home from work at unpredictable times at night.  I think for me, it's a given that he works an insane number of hours a week, but if I can look forward to a certain day off or a certain time frame that he will be home it makes it easier for me.  Don't get me wrong, he has loved what he's doing this month.  He's on pediatric surgery.  It's been totally rewarding to operate on kids.  It's made us more grateful for healthy kids for sure.  Health is precious and I totally take it for granted at times - well, until Jared comes home and tells me what he's been doing all day.

Anyway, he's been busy - the alarm goes off at 5 or 5:30 and then I see him at 6, 7 8, 9, 10, 11, 12...who knows! ;)  Plus he doesn't get home early the day after being on call because he's doing home call.  The point of all of this is that on my birthday he was on call.  In fact, he had been on call Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as well so we didn't get to celebrate early either.  I was feeling a bit sad that I probably wouldn't get to see him.  In fact, there were a few tears when my mom called that afternoon to wish me a happy birthday.

A few days before my birthday my friend sent me a text wondering if I wanted to go to dinner on my birthday.  I declined saying that there was a chance I might see Jared that night so I would prefer to do lunch.  She said she couldn't do lunch, so we didn't make plans.  I got a call from him sometime in the afternoon saying that he thought he would get finished in good time and that we could go to dinner.  I reminded him that just last week we were invited to dinner.  I got a babysitter and got ready and then he got stuck in surgery and I had to cancel everything.  I told him I would feel really sad if that happened again and why don't we just hang-out as a family if he got home.  He insisted I be ready and I refused. :)  Anyway, he did get home and we left.  I was a bit reluctant.  I didn't feel like going out.  Anyway, we got there and at our table are all my friends.  It ended up being so much fun.  Afterwards, we came home and ate cake with our next door neighbors and kids.  We are really lucky to have awesome neighbors.

Later, Jared confessed that he had switched with someone to not be on call that night.  One of his attendings had ordered my birthday cake while he was still scrubbed-in, and that I had ruined the way the surprise party was supposed to pan out because I refused to go out to dinner with my friend.  The surprise was supposed to be that we would show up to dinner and Jared would already be there.

In the end, turning 30 actually ended up being more fun than I anticipated.

  1. Congrats Heidi!!!! What a cute husband...I can't even begin to imagine what q3 call would be like...rough on everyone. But hang in there and I'm glad you got to have a good birthday in the end. :) Oh, and I DO have the nights where I eat ice cream and watch TV and wish I weren't alone, too. But nobody likes to read about those nights on the blog. :)

  2. Thanks. :) Yes, he's busy, but it could be worse. We do see him...just not as often as we would like to. At least it's not the other way around. ha!

  3. I've been 30 since September, and I have to say that it isn't so bad. It's a bit strange leaving teh 20s behind for good, though, isn't it? How wonderful that you had a surprise! Happy birthday! I hope it's your best year yet!

  5. Ahh, what a good husband. My 30th sucked too. That is the day we moved. Shad felt terrible that we were doing it that way, and said something like we'd have to have a "do-over" birthday in 4-5 months. I hate how the world doesn't stop for at least one day of the year, like it did when we were little. I wish I could have been there to surprise you too. Someday we will be in positions to come and see eachother whenever we have the whim. That is what all these work hours are promising us, and the fact that our kids keep getting bigger.
