This was lurking outside my front door this evening. This picture doesn't even do justice to how big and scary it is. In fact, I didn't even dare go back out to take a pic. I decided to just look it up online. Supposedly it is harmless unless provoked....but don't they say that about bees as well? I am terrified of bees and have been stung many times. It also can get up to 6 inches long and it FLIES!? Will someone please come over tomorrow and tell me if it is okay to go outside?!
#1 reason we left Arizona. j/k. But serious, the bugs are off the hook, everything is 10 times bigger since there's no winter to kill them off.
ReplyDeleteGROSS! I have a hard time with little bugs...I would die if I had that in my house (or just outside it). Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely disgusting! I remember when I lived in Florida the bugs seemed like they were on steroids. it must be the warm weather.
ReplyDeleteOh my heck, I would have freaked out!!!!
ReplyDeleteIs that one of those monster beetles? EWWW.
ReplyDeleteOh come on Hyde, why didn't you catch it and save it for Marley's pet? HA!
ReplyDeleteIts a palo verde root borer, they're active usually from sundown to sunup, and they're only around for a couple of months. They are not poisonous but of course those pinchers will hurt...I only know this because one of the kids I babysit LOVES them and they're his FAVORITE...but as big as they get, they are harmless...I catch them for him...I know I'm a dork...at least its not a cockroach...
ReplyDeletePalo Verde Beetles are awesome! They're related to cockroaches--can you see the resemblance? As for flying...imagine walking down the street one evening around 7 pm and one flies right into your chest. You hear an audible "thump" and wonder if some punk kid in the neighborhood just threw a dirt clod at you. Nope, it's a Palo Verde Beetle. Needless to say, boys CAN scream like little school girls when properly motivated.
