Fascination turning goal??
I could spend a long time (and did this evening) looking at sites like this and dreaming of all the cool things I could make. The funny thing? I don't even sew.
I sewed a panda bear in middle school home economics. When I was finished, it did not resemble any type of bear, or animal, or anything at all. I monopolized my teacher's time for a few days and we fixed it. It was never perfect or even that good, but it did end up resembling a bear.
So, my question is: Is sewing as hard as it looks? I mean, I glance at patterns (like I said I have a fascination) and it seems like there are a lot of details and cutting and folding involved. Or is it a bit like cooking... there can be a lot of details but in the end it makes sense and comes together and is worth it?
I would love to spend naptime "whipping" up a fun new dress for my Marley-girl or just some cute burp clothes like this, or even just "spice up" a onesie like this.
So, enlighten me. Is this a "hobby" I should venture into or am I up for a lot of frustration?
YOU can totally do it Hydes! Seriously, it's all about trial and error... and eventually you get your groove down. I myself am still trying to find that groove... but if I did it more, I'm sure I'd find it!
ReplyDelete{p.s. the burp cloths are a GREAT place to start!}
I LOVE to sew and I wish I had more time for it. My girls usually got an easter dress each year when they were little (sometimes matching - do you think they would still go for a matching easter dress?) I agree - trial and error. Stick with basic fabrics- flannels and cotton blends. Stay away from stretchy fabrics or satins at first. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteThat is a cool site Heidi. I'll have to bookmark that when I get back to Cali. I'm in Utah right now helping w/ my sister's wedding and throwing her a shower. I was intriqued by Ping (I think that is what they call it) a different option to evite. I got my new fonts from the handwriting blog. I saw it on Shannon's blog. LOVE the new fonts and I'm using them Erin & Jake's sign in book. I'm compiling a book with quotes and pics, using blurb. It is coming together beautifully! If you learn to do the burb clothes, that's a great shower gift. I'm impressed with your desire to sew!
ReplyDeleteCynthia- I would LOVE to see Roxanne and Melanie in matching Easter dresses :) I think Mel would totally go for it but Roxanne would be too embarassed? What do you thinK? :)
ReplyDeleteJen--Thanks...I should really just try right? My concern is that I'll convince my husband that I need a sewing machine and then after a few of those "errors" I will loose interest. My parents bought me a new violin right before I quit taking private lessons...I have hardly touched it since.
Sewing and I have a love/hate relationship. I have done it for as long as I can remember and there were MANY tears in front of it growing up. But I would say the outcome is definatley worth it to me. There are soooo many fun things you can do. I would take the plunge if I were you.
ReplyDelete*patterns have never been easy for me to do. It is just something that you will have to become familiar with over time I guess.
I agree you just have to find your thing. My mom wants to make clothes and only clothes.. I am not a clothes maker. I'd rather make pillows, blankets, drapes, etc. because I feel like I get more out of my time. My fav thing to do with kids and babies is to find a cute outfit at the store and buy fabric that looks cute with it and make matching burp bibs and blankets. You can do it! and tell jared that EVERY women needs a sewing machine!
ReplyDeleteHurray! You can do this! It is not mysterious - and nothing to be intimidated by. I think it is easier than cooking because there are fewer variables. If you forget a step, you CAN go back and fix it w/o a hint that anything went wrong. Now, if you forgot a baking ingredient...
ReplyDeleteCynthia is right about beginning fabric selections; you must pay close attention to that and frustration is reduced dramatically.
I have 2 sewing machines; let's set up shop and get you started! You can make a lot of toddler clothes so cute - and you don't always need a pattern, either! So fun! Think of halloween! School skits! Gifts! Home decorating!
One more thing: it is not a "hobby", it is a life-skill! ESPECIALLY when Marley approaches the dreaded Prom Dress event, you will want to know how to alter things all by yourself so it doesn't look homemade.
